The Problems:
1. It defines who a person as someone “who has been born and is alive.” It thus strips the unborn of their personhood and humanity.
2. It removes abortion (first or secondhand) from the legal realm to the health realm. This means that if a pregnant woman is assulted resulting in the loss of her unborn child no legal action can be taken in response to the child’s death.
3. It allows abortions to be performed by non licensed physicians. This puts women at an increased risk for complications. Women who have late term abortions are already at a higher risk for mental health issues such as: depression, PTSD, suicide, hemorrhage, organ damage or loss, and infections. The Journal of Pregnancy puts the abortion mortality rate for abortions preformed at 21 weeks or higher at 76.6 per 100,000.
4. It repeals protections for babies born alive after failed abortions.
